Mr. Barry E. Blackmon, II. hails from Jacksonville, Florida.  He is a 2000 graduate of Bethune-Cookman University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communications and Interdisciplinary Studies and completed his Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

 

Mr. Blackmon brings an authentic and refreshing new perspective to the field of education. The innovative and passionate leader known for his countless strategies in changing school culture, and increasing student achievement, chose teaching as a career so that he could reach students in a positive way, not only academically but with self esteem as well. Many students around campus often look up to him as the epitome of a role model.  Therefore, he makes certain to model the behaviors that are representative of a true scholar and gentleman.

 

Mr. Blackmon’s talent, influence, and transformative leadership in the district has propelled him into leadership roles as a Social Studies Instructional Coach, and now as an Assistant Principal.

He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Hands on Atlanta Volunteer Committee, and The Equal Justice Initiative.

During his summer breaks, he has traveled to Tema' Ghana, West Africa and Merida, Mexico. In both countries he tirelessly and unselfishly volunteered his time to teach at primary schools that lacked sufficient resources, thus reaffirming his commitment in dedicating his life to educating and inspiring disenfranchised youth locally and globally.

In response to his years of service and steadfast dedication, he was featured on Atlanta’s Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) as an “American Graduate Champion Educator”. He is one of the prestigious Georgia Trend’s “40 under Forty” Influential people.  Selected as the 2014 Teacher of the Year at B.E.S.T. Academy, Atlanta Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year, The 2015 District-wide Teacher of the Year for Atlanta, and most recently The Atlanta Public Schools Assistant Principal of the Year.

In addition, he is the Founder of the “Gentlemen’s Project”. The project is designed to help young men grow and develop a better sense of confidence, grooming, paths to manhood, and respect. His initiative provides enlightening and rewarding experiences of being a gentleman and reemphasizing the art of chivalry.

 

He believes that his mission in education is to assure that his students are knowledgeable, productive, and responsible contributors of the world.
